Common misconceptions about banner advertising.

Here are some of the most common myths about banner advertising:-

They deter visitors
Tell that to Yahoo!  The Yahoo search directory is one of the most popular sites on the Internet and they have banners on every page.

Popup ads are another matter of course.

Nobody clicks on them
Anyone who has a reasonably popular site here will know that isn't true just by looking at their site stats.

They advertisers wouldn't still use them after all this time if they didn't bring results.

They spoil the look of a site
That depends entirely on the skill of the site designer.  Most banners are of a standard size (all the Spaceports ones are), so it is easy to blend them in to the design before the site ever reaches the server.

They slow pages down
True - to a certain extent.  No image can load instantly, but it is in the interest of the advertiser to keep the size down so that people will see it before moving on or scrolling down.

Most are about 10-15 Kb.

They just aren't useful
Not all banners are useful or interesting to everyone, but the same can be said of Web sites.  Enough of them are interesting and useful to enough people for advertisers to think them worthwhile.

I personally have found some very interesting sites by clicking on banner ads whilst surfing.

Sites are better without them
Let me explain this one in simple terms.

No banners = no revenue.  No revenue = no free host.  No free host = no free site.

Is having no free sites better?

Advertisements are a bad thing
I think we know by now that this isn't true, but let me just ask this one question:-

Have you ever not bought a newspaper or magazine just because it has advertisements in?
