Several sites offer novels and stories in plain text format, but these can have the following
disadvantages:-
- A fixed line length
- A lack of emphasis (no bold or italics)
- Poor formatting
- Poor printout quality
HTML was developed to enhance text files and address the problems listed above. It is
therefore ideally suited for displaying text in a more easily readable format on different
platforms.
HTML also has many advantages over other proprietary formats - such as Acrobat Reader or Rocket
Book - in that it is more widely available on even the most basic systems.
Why here?
I will try to explain a few of the reasons why I started this mini-site on an established site
seemingly having little to do with this subject.
I've always had a passion for reading - especially fantasy and science fiction novels.
I've had a great deal of experience with computers as a hobby - and I enjoy using them.
Finally, I've come to realise that classic works of literature are not as accessible as they might
be.
For some time now I've been toying with ideas to bring those together in one project. This
site is a prototype for that project.
We hope that this site will give people the chance to discover (or rediscover) some of the
classic novels from the past. If even 10% of our visitors read a single short story or novel
that they otherwise would not have considered reading, our efforts will have been more than
worthwhile.
Adding this sub-site to the Unofficial Spaceports Guide, which already gets a steady flow of
visitors, makes it more likely that people will get that chance.
Spaceports also allows its users access to an unlimited amount of space, and it seemed a shame
to limit the site to one main subject.
