Overview
Spaceports is a free Web site provider offering fast Web site space with no size
restrictions. Advertising is automatically added to standard HTML pages, but these can be
removed for a small annual fee. They also allow commercial sites.
Spaceports is geared towards intermediate or advanced webmasters, as they do not have an online
editor. The only way to access your files is via FTP or a restricted browser upload.
You will need your own HTML or text editor and a basic knowledge of HTML and FTP. If you are
planning to start your very first home page, you may have problems at first.
This site and others will help though, and there is a thriving community at the Spaceports
Forums.
Space to grow
When you sign up with Spaceports for a free Web hosting account, you automatically get 20 Mb of
space. If you require more space after your account is created, you can submit a request for
additional space. Be sure that you really do need that extra space though, as sites that are
still empty 14 days after activation will be once again, made available.
CGI
Spaceports also offer the use of CGI, which is still rare for a free provider. This is
offered on a completely separate server, which takes some getting used to but makes for a more
stable site.
Conclusion
If you have previous experience with creating Web sites and need to position displayed banners
carefully, Spaceports could well be the host for you. They do not currently offer the
direct use of your own domain name, but there are third party services that will provide them for
use with a Spaceports site.
