Okay, if you've finished editing (or want to leave that page as it is) save the file as
index.htm or index.html (all lowercase) somewhere obvious on your hard drive.
If you're using NotePad, it would be safest to put quotes around the filename - save it as
"index.htm" or "index.html" so that NotePad doesn't add .txt to the end.
I suggest that you create a directory (folder) for all your pages to go into. Call it
spaceports or something memorable as you will need to find it again later.
Whilst on the subject, don't be tempted to delete the copies of your pages that are stored on
your hard drive unless you really don't need them any more. You should always keep a
backup copy of your Web pages as files can be lost from Web servers.
I haven't had any problems here with files at Spaceports (and I've had this site since February
2000), but several other hosts I have used have managed to lose entire sites in one go. You do not
want to go to your site one day and find a page saying something along the lines of "We are sorry,
but due to a server crash..." and not have copies to upload.
You can check how the page would look by opening that file in your browser. Make sure that
there aren't any spare > or < characters floating around - they're tricky
customers when you first start using HTML.
Note that the Spaceports banner will not display until the page is actually uploaded to your
site (it's a special server code specific to Spaceports).
If you're reasonably happy with the way it looks (bearing in mind you will be replacing it
later), you are ready to move on to the next step.
