General questions

Q: How do I check how much space I have used?

A: You can now find this out from within the members' area of the Spaceports main site. After logging in there, you can check a wide range of stats for your site, including how much space you have allocated to you and how much you are currently using.

Q: How do I change my password?

A: There is an option to have a new random password assigned to your account if you have forgotten your current one.  There is a form at config.spaceports.com/forgot.php for this.

Changing passwords via telnet has been disabled (again) due to the problems it caused, so there is not currently a way to change to a specific password.

Back to FAQ

Q: Can I have more than one Spaceports account?

A: You are limited to one Spaceports account only, which can consist of a website and a CGI-BIN with the same username.

You have can have unlimited space for your website, so use sub-directories to create different 'sites'.

Back to FAQ

Q: How do I delete a Spaceports account?

A: If you signed up more than once, or no longer wish to use your site, you can go to www.spaceports.com/unsubscribe.php and fill out the form there to remove it.

Please note that you cannot get a deleted site back again.

Back to FAQ

Q: What is a 'planet' server?

A: This is a term used to describe the standard Website servers, which were originally named after planets. It came into use when the CGI-BIN server was created, and is used as an easy way to differentiate between the two types.

Q: What do I name my HTML documents?

A: HTML documents should have a .htm or .html extension. The servers are case sensitive, so mypage.htm, MyPage.htm and mypage.HTM would all be treated as different files.

Avoid using spaces in filenames, use an underscore (_) or minus (-) character instead. Also, if you want to make your pages more accessible to those using older systems, restrict the length of your filenames to a maximum of 8 characters, with a 3 character extension.

i.e. goodname.htm is okay, but nastyname.htm and badname.html may cause problems for some visitors.

Back to FAQ

Q: What types of files can I use?

A: On the 'planet' servers, you can use standard HTML documents, and Web compatible image and sound files only. Dynamic content, such as Perl and PHP scripts, or files using SSI (Server Side Includes) must be uploaded to the CGI-BIN server to work.

You can use JavaScript on the 'planet' servers though, as that runs on the visitor's system, not on the server.

Q: What is the HTML path for my root directory?

A: /~username/

Back to FAQ

Q: What's the ~ character mean?

A: The ~ character is known as a tilde. Your site is not actually stored very close to the server root, so the tilde character is used to make your URL (address) shorter.

~username basically tells the server to find the directory belonging to 'username'.

Back to FAQ

Q: When do I use a tilde?

A: The general rule is: If it's a URL then use a tilde, if it's a path then don't include one.

Back to FAQ

Q: How do I create my pages?

A: Spaceports do not supply an online page editor, as the service is intended for experienced users.

You must either use an offline HTML or text editor (see the novice section).

Back to FAQ

Q: How do I get my pages onto my site?

A: You must either use a program called an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client, or use the browser based version in the members' area.

See the FTP section for more information.

Errors

Q: I get a message about a missing index.html file, what gives?

A: Whenever anyone uses a URL that doesn't name a specific file, such as http://io.spaceports.com/~wysardry/ the server will try to display a default file. This default file must be named index.htm or index.html for that to happen.

If you do not do this, the only way your page will be displayed is by using the full path to the file, such as http://io.spaceports.com/~wysardry/whatever.htm

If you do not add a valid index file directly inside the public_html directory, your site is likely to be deleted by the Spaceports robot.

Back to FAQ

Q: I can't see the pages I uploaded, where are they?

A: You need to upload your pages inside the public_html folder. Any new directories you create must also be inside there.

Back to FAQ

Q: I don't have a public_html folder, what do I do?

A: Simply create one in your root directory using your FTP client.

Back to FAQ

Q: What does [an error occurred while processing this directive] mean?

A: If you are getting this message on a 'planet' server it can mean one of two things:-

  1. You are using an incorrect banner code - the correct code can be found on the Revenue FAQ page. The CGI-BIN and 'planet' servers use different code.
  2. You are trying to use SSI (Server Side Includes) code which is only supported on the CGI-BIN server.

Server names

Q: What are the names of all the user servers?

A: In alphabetical order:-

apollo, atlas, calypso, cirrus, cronus, europa, galileo, ganymede, hermes, hyperion, io, jupiter, leda, luna, mars, mercury, mir, nebula, neptune, oberon, orion, phobos, pluto, saturn, scorpius, sol, titan a.k.a. uranus, venus, vulcan and www.

Plus cgi-bin.spaceports.com which is a special CGI server.

(Correct on 28th April, 2003).

Back to FAQ

Q: Can I pick which server I am on?

A: No. Whenever a server reaches the maximum number of users, a new one is built and new accounts are added to that one instead.

Back to FAQ

Q: Why is the Uranus server a.k.a. Titan?

A: Some people objected to the name Uranus, so the name was changed. Both names still work as a URL.

Back to FAQ

Q: How are the names chosen?

A: When Spaceports first started, the servers were named after planets in our solar system. This was later expanded to include known celestial bodies.

Back to FAQ

Q: Why is there no server for Earth?

A: There is. The www server represents Earth.
