General questions

Q: What is Spaceports?

A: Spaceports is a free web hosting service offering unlimited space.

Q: What features does Spaceports offer?

A: Spaceports offer the following features:-

  • Free website hosting
  • Unlimited space on the 'planet' servers
  • 10Mb of space with CGI, PHP, SSI and MySQL on the CGI-BIN server
  • Web based email
  • Support via IRC and forums

Note: Revenue sharing has been discontinued since November, 2001 due to the severe drop in revenue earned from banner advertising.  It may be reinstated if the market picks up again.

This effectively puts the free domain scheme on hold also.

Q: Where are Spaceports located?

A: Alberta, Canada.

Q: What are the rules?

A: The official Spaceports policies can be found here and my own FAQ for them is here.

Q: What should I do if I see a site that breaks the rules?

A: If it is a minor transgression, consider sending an email to the site owner. If it is something more serious and/or you wish the Spaceports staff to handle it, send an email to abuse@spaceports.com giving any relevant details.

Note: A site not displaying banners is no longer necessarily breaking the rules as it is now possible to pay to have them removed.

Q: Are they reliable?

Short A: Yes.

Long A: Spaceports is a subsidiary of Tera-Byte - the largest hosting provider in Canada - so the staff know what they are doing. Spaceports may do things slightly differently to other free hosts, but the reasons are usually to improve the services and/or reliability. From my own independent monitoring of this site and others hosted elsewhere, I have found them to be much more reliable than other free providers.

Q: Are ASP, ColdFusion or FrontPage extensions supported?

A: No.  These features are not supported at Spaceports, and are unlikely to be in the future as they require the use of a Windows based operating system (Spaceports uses a UNIX variant).

You can achieve much the same thing with greater efficiency using the existing Perl, PHP, SSI and/or MySQL options.

Q: What are the space and bandwidth limits?

A: The CGI-BIN server is limited to 10Mb space and/or 1000 files.  'Planet' server accounts start off with 20Mb (10Mb for older users), which can be upgraded in stages.

The bandwidth limit for free sites is now 100Mb per day and/or 1Gb per month for each server account.  Those that have paid $20 to remove ads for a year have a limit of 500Mb per day and/or 5Gb per month.

Q: Why are there two types of server?

A: Static and dynamic files need very different setups to work at their best.  Perl and PHP scripts are a lot less secure and more unstable than static HTML pages.  This can lead to more frequent server problems - including crashes.

By keeping the two content types separate, the system is much faster and more stable overall.  The 'planet' servers, having more users and files, take longer to reboot than the CGI-BIN server.

This way, if a problem script crashes the server, static content is still available on the unaffected 'planet' servers, and dynamic content also comes online again more quickly.

Stats

Q: Where do I find traffic and file statistics for my site?

A: From within the members' area of the Spaceports site.

Back to FAQ

Q: How often do the stats update?

A: Approximately once per day.

Back to FAQ

Q: What are those figures marked as 'clicks'?

A: These figures are from the revenue sharing scheme (now discontinued).  They used to show how many clicks the banners on your site had received.  If the scheme starts up again, they will begin to change.
