Inline banners may be optional for pages on the 'planet' servers, but they must be
included on the CGI-BIN server (unless you've paid to have ads removed).
If your script outputs a Web page, you must add the CGI-BIN banner code. This includes
pages using PHP, Perl or SSI. The method used is irrelevant, it's the result that counts.
Of course, if you're using an include command you do not have to insert the code into every
single file that makes up the page. It only has to be inserted once per complete page
displayed.
To avoid misunderstandings, I strongly suggest that you avoid using .php, .htm, .html or .shtml
as the file extension for files that are "includes". It's bad practice to use the last 3 in
any case, as they aren't complete HTML documents and should not be named as if they are.
Use .txt or .inc or similar if you want to avoid the possibility that the files will be mistaken
for standalone pages by the staff.
Counter scripts that are included in pages on the 'planet' servers using IMG tags
are not required to have the code inserted as the page displayed will have the adframe at the
bottom.
If you're unsure, the basic rule is: "A Spaceports banner of some sort must be displayed with
every page, unless you have paid for the services."
Those of you using pages on the 'planet' server to frame others on the CGI-BIN server will need
to ensure that the CGI-BIN pages cannot be accessed outside of your frameset without a banner
displaying.
The safest thing to do is include the banner code regardless.
CGI-BIN banner code
The code for pages on the CGI-BIN server is
<a target="_blank"
href="http://www.spaceports.com/cgi-bin/banner.cgi?server=cgi-bin&username=YOURNAME&click=1"><img
src="http://www.spaceports.com/cgi-bin/banner.cgi?server=cgi-bin&username=YOURNAME&view=1"
height=60 width=468 border=0 alt="Please visit our sponsors."></a>
Change YOURNAME to your username (without the ~ character).
The (optional) code for use on the standard servers is in the planet section of this site.
Acceptable wording
You cannot ask or tell people to click on the banners.
The only acceptable phrase you can use on your pages is "Please visit our
sponsors." This is already part of the ALTernative text description for the banner in
any case.
The phrase has to stand alone so that there is no possibility of it being misconstrued as being
part of any other text.
i.e. You cannot put "Please visit our sponsors. They make this site
possible." or "This site relies on banner revenue. Please visit our
sponsors."
Personally, I see little need to draw attention to the banners as most people know what they are
for anyway.
